The Center of Rare Epilepsies is one of the largest centers in the Baltic States in terms of the number of consultations and treatments for vagus nerve stimulation. In 2020, over 2,000 patients were consulted, and 34 patients were treated for vagus nerve stimulation. The Center was established in 2001. There are more than 1,300 individuals in our patient monitoring system for rare epilepsies. Since 2019, the CRE has been a member of the European Network of Reference Centers EpiCARE.

The center has developed a unique monitoring system that collects data on newly diagnosed cases, monitors the course of the disease and evaluates the effectiveness of treatment. The data collected in it is analyzed and constantly updated.

The Center of Rare Epilepsies prioritizes the development of biomedical research that promotes medical innovation. We enable our patients to receive new, advanced treatments for epilepsy, seizures and other similar diseases and states. We organize and develop epidemiological studies of treatment outcomes and continuously improve treatment protocols based on the principles of evidence-based medicine.

The specialists working in Center of Rare Epilepsies regularly participate in international conferences and update their knowledge, present the results of research conducted at the center. We collaborate with global epilepsy organizations - the International League against Epilepsy, the American Epilepsy Society and others. We are involved in organizing events and developing recommendations for epilepsy testing and treatment locally and globally. Our center collaborate with Lithuanian organizations such as Lithuanian Society of Epileptologists, Lithuanian Neurologists Association. Together with the Lithuanian Society of Epileptologists, we organize annual conferences on epilepsy. These conferences are attended by physicians, students, patients and their family members. Our specialists and international speakers give presentations on various epilepsy related topics.

Employees of the Center of Rare Epilepsies teach Vilnius University students, residents and other specialist who wants to deepen their knowledge of epilepsy diagnostics and treatment.

We work closely with other epilepsy centers: Dianalund Epilepsy Center (Denmark), University of Copenhagen (Denmark), University of Gothenburg (Sweden), University of Rostock (Germany), University of Bochum (Germany), Charite Clinic in Berlin (Germany), University of Bristol (United Kingdom). Kingdom), University of Florianopolis (Brazil), Dutch Epilepsy Center. Professors of these centers come to Vilnius to give presentations, share their experience with colleagues, and participate in consultation for the most complex epilepsy patients.
