The Huntington's Disease Competence Center (CC), established in 2015, is the largest center for the diagnosis, treatment, training, and research of Huntington's disease in Lithuania. Patients from Lithuania and other countries with Huntington's disease are treated in the CC of Huntington's disease. Huntington's Disease CC provides a wide range of outpatient and inpatient services.

This center provides geneticists, neurologists, psychiatrists, physical and rehabilitation physicians, and rehabilitation specialists (logotherapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, medical psychologists), dieticians, and other specialist consultations. In Huntington's Disease CC, we use the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies: laboratory, instrumental, molecular diagnostics, medical treatment, medical rehabilitation services, psychological and social assistance to patients.

 

Involvement and achievements

The Huntington's Disease Competence Center (CC) is one of the largest centers in the Baltics regarding the number of consultations performed. Since the inception of the Huntington's Disease CC in 2015, 157 individuals have been consulted by geneticists, neurologists, psychiatrists, physical and rehabilitation physicians, and rehabilitation specialists, dieticians, and other professionals. There are more than 200 individuals in the Huntington's disease CC patient monitoring system.

Huntington's Disease CC conducts clinical, instrumental, and genetic research of Huntington's disease, applies advanced disease detection methods and provides outpatient and inpatient medical rehabilitation services. Since 2017, the Huntington's Disease CC has been a member of the European Reference Center for Rare Neurological Diseases (ERN RND) of the European Network of Reference Centers. The center has developed a unique monitoring system that collects data on newly diagnosed cases, monitors the course of the disease, and evaluates treatment effectiveness. The data collected in it is analyzed and updated continuously.

The Huntington's Disease CC prioritizes the development of biomedical research that promotes medical innovation. Our center conducts epidemiological research and continuously improves treatment protocols based on the principles of evidence-based medicine. The doctors of the center regularly participate in international conferences, where they update their knowledge and present the research results at the center.

The center cooperates with the Lithuanian Huntington's Disease Association, organizes scientific-practical conferences for patients, doctors, residents, and students.

The Huntington's Disease CC collaborates with members of the European Reference Center for Rare Neurological Diseases of the European Center of Reference Centers. Our CC employees teach Vilnius University students, residents, and other specialists.
