History of the Center
The dawn of anesthesiology and intensive care in Lithuania is related to famous physicians Andrew Sniadecki, Adam Ferdinand Adamowicz and Ludwig Lachowicz, who can be considered as pioneers of pain management and resuscitation at Vilnius University. Development of modern anesthesiology and intensive care is closely linked to the beginning of complex surgery. Difficult surgical procedures drove the need for advanced and safe anesthesia techniques.

History of contemporary anesthesiology started in 1965 at General Surgery Cathedral Clinical Base and Complex Cardiac and Vascular Surgery Laboratory. Here anesthesiology parted from general surgery and started developing as a separate medical specialty. Simultaneously, preparation and growth of anesthesiology and intensive care specialist has started.

After reorganization of General Surgery Cathedral in 1990 September 1st, two Anesthesiology and Reanimatology clinics were established (headed by Prof. Juozas Ivaškevičius, MD, PhD and assist. prof. Alis Baublys, MD, PhD). Later in 2002 these two clinics were merged into one Anesthesiology and Reanimatology clinic, which was run by prof. Juozas Ivaškevičius until 2012 and then passed to prof. Jūratė Šipylaitė, MD, PhD.
