Scientific activity

 Main areas of the scientific research of the centre are:
1.      Cognitive impairment during epilepsy, neurodegerative disorders and demyelinating diseases.
2.      New diagnostic and treatment methods of cerebrovascular diseases.
3.      Neurophysiological changes of peripheral nervous system diseases.
4.      Neurology and art.

Along with other clinics, employees of the centre of Neurology are participating in the Vilnius University scientific research projects ”The search of modern methods for prevention of progression of atherosclerosis and the effectiveness of their clinical use” and “Introduction into practice of endovascular therapy in neurology and neuroangiology”.

The employees of the centre of Neurology constantly give presentations in Lithuanian and international congresses, publish scientific research publications in acknowledged reviewed Lithuanian and international medical journals, participate in international clinical trials and are members of multiple international organizations and associations.

Participation in scientific research projects and international programs

In 2005-2007 project “Lithuania’s patients with epilepsy memory investigations with computerized CDR system” funded by the Lithuanian State Studies Foundation was implemented.

The clinical research study "Clinical, radiological and neurophysiological tools for early diagnosis of Parkinson‘s disease" (KRANEPARK) supported by the Lithuanian Research Council under the contract No.MIP077/2011 has been performed in 2011-2012. Assuming the results of the research, the guidelines on the early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease and several scientific articles have been prepared.

Along with Vilnius Gediminas Technical University and Vilnius University, in 2011 project “The biomechanics of Parkinson’s disease: study of upper extremity kinematics and kinetics“ was started. Project „KIN-NEURAL system for Parkinson’s disease diagnostics and monitoring” was initiated.

The centre of Neurology takes part in international thrombolysis for acute stroke register SITS (Safe Implementation of Thrombolysis in Stroke) and European Register of Antiepileptic Drugs and Pregnancy EURAP. The employees of the centre have participated in international academic institutions initiated stroke and cerebrovascular disorders research projects “Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis and Risk of Stroke”, ASCRS, “Asymptomatic Carotid Emboli Study”, ACES, “Scandinavian Candesartan Acute Stroke Trial”, SCAST.

Since 1996 the centre of Neurology participates in international clinical trials of new drugs. About 100 trials were conducted in the centre. Trials of drugs, used in epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, migraine, stroke, were performed

In 1997 former Vilnius University Clinic of Neurology (now – centre of Neurology) started publishing the first specialized neurological scientific journal “Seminars in neurology” (chief editor Mr. V. Budrys). The journal was included into the list of journals suitable for publications for scientific degree in 2000. Now it is an official journal of the Lithuanian Association of Neurology; the Lithuanian Association of Child Neurology and the Lithuanian Society of Neurosurgery.
