Using European union structural funds the Department of Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Laboratory medicine and Department of Human and Medical Genetics of Vilnius university have developed a program „FUNDAMED – Development of research and science with new molecular technologies in fundamental medicine". These resources were used to establish educational laboratories of Molecular biochemistry and Analytical cytology. Modern chromatography, mass spectrometry instruments, flow cytometer / cell sorter are used in disease diagnostics, for example, in therapeutic drug monitoring, determination of various metabolites, cell surface receptors, and performance of research work, for instance, analysis of metabolism regulation and signal molecules.
CLM workers actively participate in the work of the Lithuanian society of laboratory medicine (chairman – Prof. Z. A. Kučinskienė, since 2012 – assoc. Prof. D. Vitkus) activities, international science events, they actively study, improve their qualification, read reports in Lithuanian and international seminars, conferences, congresses. The Lithuanian society of laboratory medicine and the Lithuanian society of human genetics together with LMC publish a journal „Laboratorinė medicina"(
CLM specialists represent Lithuanian laboratory medicine in international organizations such as IFCC (International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine), EFCC (European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine), and are the members of the Registry committee and Quality management committee of later federation. CLM specialists are active experts in certification of laboratories of Lithuanian health care institutions.
In the year 2008 the first in Lithuania process improvement project, including automated pre-analytical sample preparation, automated data flow, was implemented in laboratory.
