History of centre

History of urology center is closely related to Vilnius University. It starts in 19th century, when doctor J. Niškovskis performed pioneering lithotomy operations. Academic development of Urology center started after 2nd world war in Vilnius University surgical department, where student education and professional education of physicians took place. Separate lectures on urology started in 1976 in Faculty of Surgical Department headed by Prof. A. Sučila. The head of urology courses was Ass. Prof. P. Černiauskas. After re-establishment of State of Lithuania in 1990 Medical faculty underwent reforms. New Clinic of Nephrourology headed by Prof. B. Dainys was developed. In 1999 this clinic was integrated into Vilnius University Hospital ‚Santariškių klinikos‘ where two new departments of nephrourology were created. 1st department was specialised in urology, 2nd in nephrology and urological therapy. Following academical reforms and hospital restructurization in 2006 Urology Centre headed by Prof. F. Jankevičius was established.
