The Centre of Hepatology, Gastroenterology and Dietetics (hereafter referred to as the Centre) can be traced back to the 7th decade of the last century when the head of the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases of the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University Professor Mykolas Marcinkevicius (who is considered the founder of the gastroenterology in Lithuania) became concerned for the gastroenterology, defended his first thesis for habilitated Doctor’s Degree in the field of the gastroenterology and started gathering physicians interested in this field. Shortly after that under his supervision Dalia Tamuleviciute and Kazimiera Noreikaite-Zeruoliene also defended their theses for the Doctor’s Degree in the field of gastroenterology.

The Department of Gastroenterology was founded on the basis of the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases in the IIIrd Hospital of Vilnius. Later the same Department was founded in the Red Cross Hospital. Gastroenterology continued to be the centre of the interest in the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases the activity which was especially successful when the Department was headed by Professor Marijonas Krikštopaitis. Among his colleagues who sought creative solutions in the field of gastroenterology were lecturers of the Department Dalia Tamuleviciute, Juozas Pucinskas, Kazimiera Noreikaite-Zeruoliene, Algimantas Irnius and Danute Speiciene. Under the initiative of the Professor Marijonas Krikstopaitis, in 1986 the scientific research laboratory of pathology of digestive organs was established and young creative professionals joined the staff. Staff members of the laboratory Jonas Valantinas and Henrikas Calkauskas along with other members of the Department investigated pathogenesis of diseases of hepatobiliary system and conducted research in ways of its treatment. They investigated mechanisms of bile lithogenesis and possibilities for non-surgical treatment of gallstones. In Laborotory immunology research group was formed (supervised by senior lecturer Danute Speiciene), immunological tests were introduced and the effect of immunological processes on diagnostics of liver diseases and pathogenesis was investigated. At that time such new specialists as Remigijus Garalevicius, Janina Urbeliene, Julius Kalibatas, etc. joined the team of the Department. Significant research was carried out in the field of gastroenterology and theses for habilitated Doctor’s Degree (Dalia Tamuleviciute, Algimantas Irnius, Juozas Pucinskas) and Doctor’s Degree (Jonas Valantinas, Henrikas Calkauskas, Julius Kalibatas) were defended. At the time training courses in gastroenterology for physicians were launched and the first qualification improvement training session was arranged and was lead by Professor Dalia Tamuleviciute and Senior Lecturer Kazimiera Noreikaite – Zeruoliene.

At the end of 1980 Vilnius Republican Clinical Hospital in Santariskes was established and in 1982 the Department of Gastroenterology was transferred to it from Red Cross Hospital. On this basis worked Professor of the Faculty of Medical Staff Qualification Improvement of the Department of Therapeutics Dalia Tamuleviciute, Professor Juozas Pucinskas, Senior Lecturers Remigijus Garalevicius and Janina Saukiene. A number of doctors studied there and improved their qualifications, 6 theses for Doctor’s Degree were defended and 5 monographies were written, scientific articles, educational material and methodical recommendations were published.

On the 1st of January 1991 Vilnius Republican Clinical Hospital in Santariskes was reorganized and the Clinic of Gastroenterology and Dietetics of Vilnius University was the first to be founded in Lithuania. Professor Hab. Dr. Algimantas Irnius was elected as the head of the Clinic. In an attempt to stress the importance and priorities of diagnostics and treatment of liver diseases, in 2004 the Centre was renamed to the Centre of Hepatology, Gastroenterology and Dietetics (the only centre of kind in Lithuania). Since September 2005 the Centre has been headed by Professor Jonas Valantinas.
