Achievments

The Centre of Dermatovenereology of Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos is the leading dermatovenereology centre in Lithuania, which provides counseling and treatment for more than 20,000 patients (children and adults) annually. Doctors working in the Centre are experts of their field, constantly improving their skills at dermatovenereology clinics in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Italy and other European countries. The priority of our doctors is to adapt treatment and innovative technology that meets the highest standards to their daily practice.

Since 2007, the Centre has been actively developing Oncodermatology service. Our patients are examined using an innovative "FotoFinder" digital dermoscopy system. We have two modern operating theatres where outpatient surgery of benign and malignant skin tumours is performed. Diagnosis of allergic skin diseases and occupational dermatoses is carried out at the Day Care Centre, where patch tests with standard European allergens and other series (cosmetics, medicines, ulcers, etc.) are performed. The Day Care Centre also has a foot care unit where professional medical pedicure is performed for patients with foot and nail diseases. In the field of dermatovenereology, proper photo documentation is essential for monitoring patients' skin condition and for the evaluation of treatment efficacy; therefore, a modern photolaboratory was set up at the Centre in 2017.

Scientific activity

As part of the Vilnius University Clinic of Infectious and Chest diseases, Dermatovenereology and Allergology, our Centre is constantly involved in scientific and educational activity. During the past 15 years, 4 doctoral theses have been completed, 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 3 scientific doctors work in the clinic and 1 PhD student is currently working on his thesis. The Centre continually carries out scientific research. The most important topics include: chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, biological therapy, oncodermatology, allergic skin diseases. Doctors at our Centre constantly participate in clinical trials, write educational books, publish scientific articles in peer-reviewed Lithuanian and international journals.

The qualification of our doctors is improved at weekly practical seminars and conferences twice a year, where the latest diagnostic and treatment recommendations for skin diseases and rare clinical cases are presented. The Center's doctors, in co-operation with the Lithuanian Association of Dermatovenereologists (LDVD), annually organise national and international scientific conferences and seminars, give presentations and present scientific posters at both Lithuanian and international conferences and congresses.

Pedagogical activity

Our Centre is the main educational Centre of Dermatovenereology providing undergraduate and postgraduate education. In here, more than 300 Vilnius University students of medicine, dentistry and public health acquire the basics of dermatovenereology every year. The doctors of the Centre prepared dermatovenereology programmes for fourth-year medical students, fifth-year dental students and second-year postgraduates of public health. Students are given lectures, practises, seminars, examinations according to these study programs. The Centre of Dermatovenereology organises meetings of the Dermatovenerology Group of Student Research Network, where students build their knowledge of skin diseases, are making presentations and scientific work themselves. Medical students have the opportunity to do their summer practice at our Centre and get acquainted with the basics of clinical work, the specifics of the dermatovenerology and our medical team.

Every year, 4-5 doctors of the Clinic of Infectious and Chest Diseases, Dermatovenereology and Allergology complete the dermatovenereology residency. According to residency study programs, young doctors training for general practice, endocrinology, allergology and clinical immunology, pulmonology, rheumatology, dentistry and other specialties have their rotations at the Centre of Dermatovenereology. Moreover, the Centre co-operates with university hospitals of Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and other European countries where our dermatovenereology residents can develop practical skills and gain clinical experience every year.

Our Centre also organises educational courses for local dermatovenereologists and doctors of other specialties. The Centre is running qualification improvement courses "Diagnosis and treatment of the most common skin diseases", "Dermoscopy", "Skin and Sexually Transmitted Infections", etc.
