In in-patient cardiology departments of the Centre, about 5300 patients are treated yearly. In the Cardiac Intensive care unit about 4000 patients are treated yearly. Part of these patients is admitted for scheduled coronary procedures. Department of arrhythmias and invasive cardiology has the biggest numbers of primary coronary angioplasty (performed for urgent acute coronary syndromes) in the country (more than 2000 procedures per year). Other types of invasive procedures are also performed, as alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, invasive investigations of endothelial function (intracoronary acetylcholine test), angiography of other areas (aorta, pulmonary vessels, renal, limb vessels, carotid arteries etc.), and also therapeutic procedures in these areas. Non-invasive and invasive investigations of cardiac conduction system are performed, and also catheter ablation procedures. Each year about 250 ablation procedures are performed: atrioventricular nodal tachycardia, accessory pathways (effectiveness 95–98%), typical atrial flutter (90 %), ventricular tachycardia (effectiveness up to 85%). For patients with atrial fibrillation, radiofrequency and cryoballoon catheter ablation procedures are performed. Together with cardiac surgeons, radiofrequency modified atrial maze procedure is performed during mitral valve surgery). Also a significant number (compared to other European centers) minimally invasive surgical procedures for atrial fibrillation is performed. For stroke prophylaxis in patients with arial fibrillation who cannot take anticoagulants, left atrial catheter closure procedures are performed. Each year in our centre about 800 pacemakers and 50 cardioverters defibrillators are implanted. In patients with heart failure and conduction abnormalities, cardiac resynchronization therapy devices we implanted, and in this area our centre is also leading in the country. In collaboration with cardiac surgeons, minimally invasive implantation of heart valves is performed (aortic, pulmonary artery valves).

The Department of Non-invasive and Ultrasound Cardiovascular Diagnostics by 2012 has been performing almost all types of non-invasive examinations on heart, arteries and veins. Every year 27 000 transthoracic ultrasound examinations, 1100 transesophageal echocardiography procedures and 1500 dobutamine and exercise stress echocardiograms are performed; 61 000 of electrocardiograms are registered; out of those, 16 000 are analysed and assessed by the specialists; 10 000 of exercise testsand 600 cardiopulmonary tests are carried out. All known echocardiographic examinations are performed, including the transesophageal, intracardiac, intravascular, echocontrast, myocardium colour mapping, etc in 2 or 3Dimensional mode. Unit of Stress Echocardiography and cardiopulmonary stress testing accumulated one of the most extensive experiences in Europe performing dobutamine stress echocardiograms (1500 tests performed on average per year). Modern high class equipment and up to date investigational protocols are applied in performing high volume of investigations for in- and out- patients from Vilnius region and the rest of Lithuania as well for foreigners. Qualified and well trained personnel works on 7d/24 hour schedule, so investigations in emergency cases are available no matter day or night. In its daily work the Department applies the most advanced research methodologies such as entirely computerized systems for analysing, recording and storage of digital data. All the ultrasound and electrocardiography systems are connected to local area network, which can also be accessed from the global web. For the first time in Eastern Europe echocardiographic and electrocardiographic data have been transferred between the Centre and the local institutions in Eastern Lithuania. The implemented ultrasound imaging PACS database stores all the data of the tests in digital format, therefore repeated or extensive analysis is possible. Images and computerised reporting protocols are easily accessible in the local area network. The employees of the Unit have mastered technologies of imaging diagnostics by multi-dimensional computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Department serves as a basis for academical teaching and continuous medical education for students, residents of Vilnius University and doctors.

  12. Evaluation of follow-up results and survival rate after abdominal aortic aneurysm operation focusing on the progressing atherosclerosis as a cause of further complications and death.
  13. Estimation of revascularization methods focusing on the impact of vascular substitutes.
  14. Epidemiology of venous diseases in Lithuania and evaluation of treatment methods in phlebology.
  15. Investigation of natural course of arteriosclerotic occlusive and aneurysmal disease. Diagnosis endovascular and surgical treatment of the diseases of the aorta and its visceral and terminal branches.
