In Vascular Surgery Department the most modern diagnostic methods are applied: doplerography, doplerometry, ankle-brachial index as an indicator of severity of ischaemia, duplex ultrasound, conventional, computer and magnetic resonance angiographies and other tests. This allows an accurate assessment of vascular pathology leading to a further course of treatment.

At present patients suffering from such diseases as stenosis or occlusion of aortic arch branches, abdominal aorta and its visceral branches (mesenteric and kidney vessels), main arteries and large veins in the legs as well as from other chronic vascular disorders are being operated. In addition to that, patients with congenital anomalies of the vascular system undergo surgical treatment at this department too. The following scientific angiosurgical problems are tackled here: diagnosis of cerebral circulatory disturbances and methods for the reconstruction of the aortic arch branches; reconstructive surgery of the abdominal aorta and its branches, restoration of renal circulation; diagnosis of peripheral artery occlusion and reconstructive surgery of small arteries.

Vascular Surgery Department tackles the problem of acute peripheral disturbances as well. The surgeons of the Department perform restorative operations in cases of arterial embolism, thrombosis and injuries, advise on methods and treatment physicians of regional and district hospitals.

Up to 1,500 patients are treated, 1,200 surgeries, 320 endovascular procedures, 2000 doplerometries, and 1000 ultrasound examinations are performed at the Vascular Surgery Department annually.

Over 5000 patients are consulted by vascular surgeon at Vascular Surgeons Consulting Room annually.

Areas of Carter’s particular interest are:
• Hybrid surgeries for thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm and dissection.
• Stenting and stentgrafting of thoracic and abdominal aorta, carotid, visceral and peripheral arteries.
• Diagnosis and treatment of vascular dysplasia’s for children and adults.
• Surgery and endovascular treatment for carotid and vertebral arteries.
• Correction of portal hypertension.

In Lithuania, surgeries for portal hypertension and hybrid surgeries are performed only at Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos. Medical personnel of the Center participate in liver and pancreas transplantation program, difficult surgical oncology cases with vascular involvement. The Center developed diagnosis and treatment algorithm for children’s portal hypertension.
